The gesture that Grandma Groa and Valgard are making - the fist raised with the back facing out - is a common casual gesture in Gamilin Faham. It means "victory" or "strength." In military sign language it is used to signal that a battle or skirmish has been won, but it has since moved into the casual realm, and is used both to declare that you have won and to wish others luck.

There's a whole set of common gestures I've made up, and I'm planning on putting them on the comic's Tumblr at some point.

Also the thing Groa is wearing is a boar's head and there is a whole story behind why she is wearing it. I could write a separate comic about that tale (and I'm seriously contemplating it, so...)
